Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. Infestation is common, found worldwide, and affects people of all races and social classes. Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes.

What are the signs and symptoms of scabies infestation?

Pimple-like irritations, burrows or rash of the skin, especially the webbing between the fingers; the skin folds on the wrist, elbow, or knee; the penis, the breast, or shoulder blades. The scalp is not usually affected.
Intense itching, especially at night and over most of the body.
Sores on the body caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected with bacteria.
How did I get scabies?

By direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person already infested with scabies. Contact must be prolonged (a quick handshake or hug will usually not spread infestation). Infestation is easily spread to sexual partners and household members. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels, and bedding.

Who is at risk for severe infestation?

People with weakened immune systems and the elderly are at risk for a more severe form of scabies, called Norwegian or crusted scabies.

How long will mites live?

Once away from the human body, mites do not survive more than 48-72 hours. When living on a person, an adult female mite can live up to a month.

Did my pet spread scabies to me?

No. Pets become infested with a different kind of scabies mite. If your pet is infested with scabies (also called mange), and they have close contact with you, the mite can get under your skin and cause itching and skin irritation. However, the mite dies in a couple of days and does not reproduce. The mites may cause you to itch for several days, but you do not need to be treated with special medication to kill the mites. Until your pet is successfully treated, mites can continue to burrow into your skin and cause you to have symptoms.

How soon after infestation will symptoms begin?

For a person who has never been infested with scabies, symptoms may take 4-6 weeks to begin. For a person who has had scabies, symptoms appear within several days. You do not become immune to an infestation.

How is scabies infestation diagnosed?

Diagnosis is most commonly made by looking at the burrows or rash. A skin scraping may be taken to look for mites, eggs, or mite fecal matter to confirm the diagnosis. If a skin scraping or biopsy is taken and returns negative, it is possible that you may still be infested. Typically, there are fewer than 10 mites on the entire body of an infested person; this makes it easy for an infestation to be missed.

Can scabies be treated?

Yes. Several lotions are available to treat scabies. Always follow the directions provided by your physician or the directions on the package insert. Apply lotion to a clean body from the neck down to the toes and left overnight (8 hours). After 8 hours, take a bath or shower to wash off the lotion. Put on clean clothes.

All clothes, bedding, and towels used by the infested person 2 days before treatment should be washed in hot water; dry in a hot dryer.

A second treatment of the body with the same lotion may be necessary 7-10 days later. Pregnant women and children are often treated with milder scabies medications.

Who should be treated for scabies?

Anyone who is diagnosed with scabies, as well as his or her sexual partners and people who have close, prolonged contact to the infested person, should also be treated. If your health care provider has instructed family members to be treated, everyone should receive treatment at the same time to prevent reinfestation.

How soon after treatment will I feel better?

Itching may continue for 2-3 weeks, and does not mean that you are still infested. Your health care provider may prescribe additional medication to relieve itching if it is severe. You will know that the medication has been effective if no new burrows or rashes should appear 24-48 hours after effective treatment.

A rash may persist even if all the mites are effectively killed. This may be due to a dermatitis, or inflammation of the layers of the skin. In these cases, a mild topical steroid may be recommended.

My dog has been diagnosed as having sarcoptic mange.?

On the vet’s advice I am washing all her bedding and mine at 60 degrees where feasible and immersing the rest in Milton before washing. However my duvet is too large for my machine. If I have it dry cleaned will this be sufficient to sterilise it? I understand the the mite rarely affects humans but I don’t want to reinfect the dog who, when she’s well again, will want to sleep on my bed as she always has done.

i have just set up a pet site & with that have been creating files on dogs health problems etc, last night i did one on sacrcoptic mange, and it can cause scabies in humans, i would recommend a new duvet cover, for yourself, continue to wash dogs bedding regularly & always wash hands after stroking or petting, as well as the clothes you have been wearing that day, hope your dog is better soon.

Swan, Pit Bull Mix from Death Row Needs Help

Swan was pulled from the same city pound as Badger and HumVee. Her condition was so awful that I couldn’t tell whether she was a purebred American Pit Bull Terrier, as her skin was swollen and scabby from sarcoptic mange. Despite her constant scratching, Swan let us examine her teeth, walk her and she even wagged her tail at people and dogs. I’m unsure what she might be mixed with, but she’s recovering from the mange thanks to expensive lime & sulphur dips and antibiotic injections and will need to be treated for high heartworm infection and spayed. If you can donate towards Swan’s fund, please email wendy@camppitbull.com for the vet’s contact info. Swan is available for adoption or fostering in the Houston, Texas area.

How Long Is Scabies Contagious Once Treatment Is Started?

If a dog is diagnosed with a serious case of Sarcoptic Mange, how long should s/he be quarantined? When can they safely go into a house with other, healthy dogs without risk of spreading the mites?

If she had sarcoptic mange and was with other dogs, then the other dogs were exposed and should be treated also for it. As sarcoptic mange is HIGHLY contagious to other dogs. It takes several weeks to rid the adults off the body, then it take about another few weeks to get all the larvae. Demodex mange is harder to rid a dog off since it can harbor in the skin for the rest of the dogs life and be brought on by stress and impropernutrition. I would treat and bath all the other dogs shes with to be sure that its not constantly being passed around from dog to dog. When we’d get a contaminated Sarcoptic dog into isolation we treat all the dogs in isolation.

Has anyone had a dog with sarcoptic mange?

And if so, how did you treat it? Did it spread to other dogs in your house (if you had any other dogs) or to people living in the house?

The vet. And quick. Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious and humans can get it as well.
If this is not treated by a vet, the dog will eventually die a painful slow death.

And no, none of my dogs or myself have ever gotten it. I quarrantined and took the dogs to the vet for proper treatment.

My Pomeranian has sarcoptic mange from breeders!?

I took my 8 week old pom to the vet cause she was scratching and losing hair, and found out she has sarcoptic mange. I showed the vet a rash I have developed since I have had her and he said I have it to, that it is very contagious to humans. I went to my doc and got cream, and the pup and my other dog are being treated now. The pup is miserable and in a playpen in my room, with her bed and food and water and I clean the playpen 2x day and change her piddle pad, but she wants so bad for me to hold her! She cried constantly for attention. I don’t want to pick her up for a week, until her next treatment, when the vet said she should no longer be contagious. Can anyone recommed something to soothe her, while she is in “isolation”? I do go in and talk to her but limit my time in the room with her, becuase I am afraid of being re-infected! (i have held her for a couple of min and then put my clothes in washer and take a shower, but only hold her for a couple of mins.) Thanks!
Thanks so much to the first two reponders, your answers were very heartfelt and sincerely appreciated!

I think this is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever seen on this site. You have my sympathy now, seriously. Your breeder should be shot and then eaten by rabid wolverines for being so irresponsible.

This is such a tough situation for both of you. You can perhaps try to put an article of clothing with your scent on it, but nothing’s really going to be a substitute for your arms or physical presence. You can also try a loudly ticking clock or a radio so she doesn’t feel quite so alone.

Will pray for you and your puppy to get better very soon. Good luck.
