New Puppy With Mange….?

We recently adopted an adorable 8 week old dachshund from the ASPCA. He came with meds for demodex mange. We took for a check up yesterday. The vet we took him to says its sarcoptic mange. Now I am not sure what to do. I don’t want to pay for unnecessary treatment, as treating sarcoptic mange can get really expensive. I trust our vet but its hard for me to believe that the ASPCA would adopt out a puppy that poses a medical threat to other animals and humans. Especially since I called them and their vet had done skin scrapings too. The vets just have different results. What do I do now? Thanks for your time.

Doxies don’t usually have demodex. It’s sarcoptic that he picked up at the shelter.

Just use the meds that your vet gave. The easiest and most cost effective treatment for mange is ivermectin, but with sarcoptic even the nasty dips will work.

It is better, even if it is scarier, that it’s sarcoptic. Yes it could spread to others, but it is easily curable. Demodex usually comes back over and over because it is an immune system malfunction. Your dog is better off with this diagnosis. Doxies don’t usually get demodex. Their immune systems are not genetically weak.

And remember that the ASPCA vets are usually students or other less expensive options with only one experienced vet overseeing the “team” of others. They are not top quality at all just because of the financial aspects of the job.

How Long Is Scabies Contagious Once Treatment Is Started?

If a dog is diagnosed with a serious case of Sarcoptic Mange, how long should s/he be quarantined? When can they safely go into a house with other, healthy dogs without risk of spreading the mites?

If she had sarcoptic mange and was with other dogs, then the other dogs were exposed and should be treated also for it. As sarcoptic mange is HIGHLY contagious to other dogs. It takes several weeks to rid the adults off the body, then it take about another few weeks to get all the larvae. Demodex mange is harder to rid a dog off since it can harbor in the skin for the rest of the dogs life and be brought on by stress and impropernutrition. I would treat and bath all the other dogs shes with to be sure that its not constantly being passed around from dog to dog. When we’d get a contaminated Sarcoptic dog into isolation we treat all the dogs in isolation.

Has anyone had to treat a dog with adult Demodex?

“Adult Onset– Most demodicosis occurs in young dogs, under age one and a half. An older dog should not get demodicosis unless he or she has an underlying problem with the immune system. In such cases, demodicosis is considered an indication to seek a more serious hidden condition such as cancer, liver or kidney disease, or an immune-suppressive hormone imbalance. A more extensive medical work-up will be required.”
This is off Veterinary Partner. I have always treated pups with Demodex, but my adult Minpin, who is already a genetic nightmare, was just diagnosed with adult Demodex, and I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and what the result was.
Simon had Sarcoptic Mange when I got him, and was cured.
I would laugh if I wasn’t worried. No, I am not a breeder. I am in Minpin rescue and Simon is a foster failure because no one wanted him. he was found starved and barely alive. It took weeks to get him to a point where he could digest food, and weeks more to get some weight on him. That was 9 months ago.
This is Simon.

Are you a breeder? What is your kennel name? People need to know this if you are! THANK GOD! OK! DEMODEX mites are able to produce a substance that lowers an animal’s natural resistance to them, allowing them to multiply on the host. demodectic mange can take on two forms. Localizied or generalized. Treatment for gereralized form should be under a vets. care and is not always possible. ( which I think your dog has) Amitraz dip called mitiban has shown good results. Clip away all infected hair to facilitate topicial therapy. Wash the whole dog with betadine shampoo to remove scales and debris. Dip the dog in 10.6 milliliteers of mitiban dissovled in 2 gallons of water. Allow the dip to dry on the dog. Repeat every two weeks. Side effect: Drowsiness, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and uncoordinated movements. Only under a vets care!

My dog has a lump under her skin, is this normal?

Hi, I have been taking my anatolian shepherd to the vets over the last 5 months for sarcoptic mange. Nothing seems to be curing it; so our vet decided to give her (my dog) 0.7 Ivermectine injections weekly. She has had three injections now (over three weeks) and I have noticed a lump under her skin where the injection was given. The lump is mobile (I can move it around with my fingers, and is around 2 inches long and around 0.75 inches wide. The ivermectine injections that our vet is giving our dog don’t seem to be helping at all. I don’t know what to do, can you give advice please? Could this be Cancer?

Thanks.
1. The lump is rather firm.
2. It’s 11pm here and the vet isn’t open, I only noticed the lump about 30 mins ago.
3. She had an injection 5 days ago, and is due for another on Monday.
“take your dog to the vet” and “she needs to have it taken out” are stating the obvious….and that’s why I am on here asking YOU as there isn’t a vet open right now. If you don’t know anything about dogs and/or lumps, please don’t bother commenting.
I just checked the lump again, it seems to be sort of floating just below or even in between layers of skin. Could it be that this injection is meant to go into muscle and they didn’t do it right?
Thank you badbtch
momo…thanks for the post. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain, even when we have been prodding it…carefully prodding.

You Answered my Question: “Is the Lump At a Recent Injection Site?”, I Don’t Think you Have Much to Worry About, I Don’t Think it is a Immune Response, that Being Said, if it Gets Larger, There is Reason for Concern. BTW, Ivermectin? I had a Wire-Haired Terrier Who Had a Lump for a Couple Days After a Rabies Vaccine (Between the Shoulder Blades). This is Something that Could Be Expected From Any i.d. Injection.

EDIT: momo, Maybe a Lipoma (Benign).

My Pomeranian has sarcoptic mange from breeders!?

I took my 8 week old pom to the vet cause she was scratching and losing hair, and found out she has sarcoptic mange. I showed the vet a rash I have developed since I have had her and he said I have it to, that it is very contagious to humans. I went to my doc and got cream, and the pup and my other dog are being treated now. The pup is miserable and in a playpen in my room, with her bed and food and water and I clean the playpen 2x day and change her piddle pad, but she wants so bad for me to hold her! She cried constantly for attention. I don’t want to pick her up for a week, until her next treatment, when the vet said she should no longer be contagious. Can anyone recommed something to soothe her, while she is in “isolation”? I do go in and talk to her but limit my time in the room with her, becuase I am afraid of being re-infected! (i have held her for a couple of min and then put my clothes in washer and take a shower, but only hold her for a couple of mins.) Thanks!
Thanks so much to the first two reponders, your answers were very heartfelt and sincerely appreciated!

I think this is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever seen on this site. You have my sympathy now, seriously. Your breeder should be shot and then eaten by rabid wolverines for being so irresponsible.

This is such a tough situation for both of you. You can perhaps try to put an article of clothing with your scent on it, but nothing’s really going to be a substitute for your arms or physical presence. You can also try a loudly ticking clock or a radio so she doesn’t feel quite so alone.

Will pray for you and your puppy to get better very soon. Good luck.
