URGENT help needed! Will rate best answer. My 3 month Old Chihuahua has a baaad problem…?
Hey all..
I would like to appeal to people who have had experience with dogs. I really need some urgent advice on this as i feel like crying for the sake of my puppy.
Heres the problem:
I have the 3 month old Chihuahua (black and tan) named Muppet. I got him from a certified breeder who flew him a long distance to get to me. I love him as if he were a child of mine, and i only want the best for him. As any good pet owner would, i took him for his shots at 8 weeks old. The vet told me he prefers waiting till the puppies are 8 weeks old instead of 6 weeks old to have thier first vaccination. This is because the vet believes that its best to do it when they are a little more mature.
All went well and i took him to the vet for his shot. He was well behaved and didn’t even peep when he had his shot. He also weighed 500g! LOL. Anyway, the cornea of his eye was red when i got him, and slowly swelled more in the first 2 weeks i had him. When i took him for his shots, the vet said that it’s a burst gland and that he would have to go for an operation when he is 4 months old “if” he is old big. So i got some ointment to treat the symptoms and took him home after his shot.
About 2 hours after that, i noticed that he had an irritating itch and scratched it quite ofen. I assumed it was fleas… That was until a week later that he started scratching himself raw and till he bled. Ive treated it with lots of medication like disinfectant etc. But nothing is helping. Ive also been reading on the net alot about what the cause might be. And so far it seems as though it is either Demodectic mange or Sarcoptic Mange. Where he scratches, he has lost lots of hair and keeps scratching even though it is already bleeding and raw.
It really breaks my heart to see him do this, and he cries as he does so. I have given him a bath in anti flea and tick powder, as well as misted him down with Anti Bacterial Spray for grooming. Ive also given him a bath in Hydrogen Peroxide and Borax (because this apparently kills the hives off), but he is scratching still (and i did the Hydrogen bath tonight by the way). It got so bad that i had to bandage his paws up so he cant scratch anymore. Im going to be taking him to the vet either tomorrow or tuesday (Im in South Africa) but what can i do in the meantime or get for him? I also read up that the pet owner should rather wait until the dogs immune system cures its self if it can or it can be passed the a litter if the dog is bred with.
Im very worried about this and need some advice! =[ Its heartbreaking to see muppet like this. Please help!
(i also dont want any nasty comments like the dog should be euthanized or anything.. i will just give people with those comments low ratings.)
I will rate best answer
P.S please excuse the way ive worded this! Hehe, my spelling sux sometimes. And i gave him a bath in anti flea and tick shampoo as well as anti flea and tick powder and treated him with anti bacterial grooming spray for dogs and cats!
*note*
The shampoo and anti bacterial spray i used was herbal, and contained oatmeal, rosemary and aloe to help alleviate skin irritations.
Taking him to the Vet is your best choice to find out what is going on. It could be allergies, contact dermatitis, mites, problems with his food. You can give him some Benadryl to lessen the itching & see if that works. It should help.
When you go to the Vet he will do a skin scraping to see if there are mites. If no mites he will suggest your other options.
I had a Dane that was always scratching & he had some mites but it wasn’t any of the mange mites. Regular dips or flea & tick treatments helped him. It never went to the other dogs but the mites would bite me.
It is horrible to have a problem like this & not to know what it could be or what you can do to stop it. You don’t want your baby suffering.
Your Vet will be of more help than any of us.

nobody is gonna read something this large try making it shorter or you will stay without no answers.

You’ve treated him with a lot of chemicals at this point and I wouldn’t try anything else until you can get him to the vet tomorrow. If anything I’d be using a hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo to get all the stuff out of his coat. Many of those products you’ve used are very irritating and could be making the situation worse at this point. You need a diagnosis and an appropriate treatment at this point.

The eye problem sounds like what is called a "cherry eye", where the third eyelid has prolapsed. It can surgically be tucked back in.
The itching can be caused by many things. The vet will have to do a scraping to see if it is mites. Skip the Borax and Peroxide–they won’t help. A soothing Oatmeal shampoo may help, rinsing well in cool water. The vet really needs to diagnose this to prescribe the correct meds. He could have a bacterial infection and needs oral antibiotics.

My skin is burning just reading what you are treating this poor little thing with. Why in heavens name have’nt you taken him back to the vet to have a skin and blood workup done. You are surely going to kill this pup with all the poisons you are putting on his skin. This is why no matter what a so called breeder tells you and flys all the way from tim buk to to bring you an infected dog with absolutly no gaurantees to it’s health. This pup is suffering and I would get this poor thing in NOW

hun i feel for you and muppet all i can think of is bathing him in a tea tree shampoo until you can get him to a vet
good luck to you and muppet

I’m so sorry to hear that your dog is sick like that. You are doing the right thing by taking him to the vet. And it sounds like you already did everything you can to help him in the meantime. You seem to be a good puppy-parent and it’s just normal that you worry. I know it seems like forever while you have to wait to take him to the vet. Maybe you can take him to the emergency vet if it gets worse or if you are too worried. I wish your doogy the best!!!

If Muppet has mange you need to see the vet for a cure. He also might be itching from food allergy or reaction to the shot. Dogs can have a variety of allergies. My dog is allergic to corn and other grains. One lady’s dog was allergic to furniture polish, another to febreeze. Don’t over bathe him and be careful with borax, it is poisonous. Get rid of the mange, feed him well and have the surgery. Good luck.

The vet can do a skin scraping for mange. Some animals are allergic to fleas and will scratch themselves raw. A third problem is that he has an allergy to the food you are feeding him. Dog food, especially stuff with grain as one of the top ingredients, can cause an animal to itch.

I am really sorry for you and your little Muppet. I know how heart breaking it is to see your pet suffer and be unable to help them. I am not expert in this, but I definitely suggest (like most other people will) that you go see your vet immediantly. If you haven’t already, call your vet with your problem and ask him about it. If he cannot provide information, definitely call another vet. If you do not know any other vets, ask your neighbors if they have dogs their vet. I think you have done all you can for the time being and are being a very responsible owner and Muppet is very lucky to have such an adoring parent. Just be sure to let him rest as much as you can and give him as much love as possible. I hope you get better soon Muppet!

Doesn’t matter where you live your dog needs urgent vet treatment not a lot of baths ointments etc etc etc. It may be these that are aggravating the situation. Get dog to vet ASAP not Tuesday or day after NOW. Imagine the irritation humans suffer from a gnat bite – well your little one is going through worse than that

Perhaps another vet (for a second opinion), vaccinations-maybe there was a reaction, diet or environmental reaction-you mentioned he came from quite a distance away. I hope he gets better soon.

I’ve heard of vaccinosis (reactions to vaccines), listed on several websites.
Number 1; It never a good idea to buy a dog, without seeing it in person. Most responisble breeder will NOT fly a dog. So many places appear to be good, but if you investigate they be from puppy mills & backyard breeder which are bad places.
Number 2; A responsible breeder will never rehome a chihuhua at 8week old, Most responsible breeder will vacinate the dog BEFORE it goes to its new home, Most chihuahua breeder will wait until the dogs 12week old before being rehomed, due to the chihuahua being smaller then most dog.
Borax is toxic
Use proper dog flea medication, NOT natural remedies.
Vet, then
1st check for mange-get it treated
2nd have a look at the food, it very well maybe why the dog resulted in scratching.Try changing the diet. Beef is a common allergy, try fish or chicken or lamb flavoured, alfalfa sometimes also causes allergic reactions, as well as eggs.

DOGS
Are they carnivores?
Are they really like wolves, hyenas and jackals?
Or are they more like us?
Is it foolish to feed only meat?
Should they be fed what their human family eats?
The truth encompasses a little of each
In the wild, other hunting animals that seem similar to dogs, such as wolves and hyenas, eat fruit, leaves, grasses, dig for roots and even obtain vegetable matter from the stomachs of their prey. The bones of their pray provide calcium and help keep their teeth clean. Their diets are highly varied and change seasonally.
A domestic dog fed on human diet struggles with dairy products and can actually be poisoned by some of the common ingredients in human pantries.
The pitfalls of feeding a home-cooked diet are that it is very hard to balance and very easy to overlook the ways in which it is isn’t balanced until dog becomes ill.
With a little research and attention to detail, dogs can do very well on a diet of home cooking
Dogs are actually omnivores, they need alot less meat protein then cats, ferrets & snakes & feeding a high animal protein diet to a dog will take a toll on it health.A dog is designed to digest a wide range of plant and animal products.dogs must eat more then muscle meat.they need plenty of carbohydrates & fibre from vegetable & plant matter and only a very small amount of fat.their protein can come from both plant& animal products..the other thing to consider are sources of mineral such as calcium & phosphorous and of cause vitamins.
Cat’s are strict carnivores.this mean that some of their nutritents can be obtained only from animal sources.
However being a carnivore doesn’t mean that all of the nutrients need to be from animal products or that a carnivorous animal could survive eating muscle meat only.
A wild carnivore such as a lion will kill and eat an atelope.it will lickthe hair off and chew on the skin.the organ are consumed, including partly digested grass, leaves, and other grazed plant material.Last of all, the bones are eaten too.
Cat’s and Dog’s are also very different in their needs

You should ask your local vet or pet therapist for advice. I haven’t had this problem in my dog before. Your dog may have an allergy to the ingredient(s) in the solution for the eye. Ask your vet if you can have another prescription that won’t cause irritation to his eye.
Good Luck!

You should stop showering him in so many anti tick and flee products, this is going to further irritate his blisters and raw skin. Even though he doesn’t have fleas, he may have had one or two, and a simple bite from one of these can cause a major allergic reaction. It may also be that his food has some ingredients that he is allergic to. I would highly reccomend that you have your puppy allergy tested. This will ultimately tell if your dogs problem is allergy related or not and you can go from there. Also, don’t shower him too much, because you end up stripping him of his natural oils.
Good Luck

I would use nothing else chemical until you get to the vet. In the mean time you can get some oatmeal and put it in old hose or cheesecloth, soak it until the water is milky and then gently pour that on him.
You got the dog from a really bad breeder/puppy mill. Especially since you got the dog before 8 weeks, no reputable breeder would have shipped a 6 week old dog. Check your contract, if you have any type of health guarantee you might be able to recoup some on the cost. At the least I would send them a copy of the vet problems, and explain in no uncertain terms that you will be seeking reimbursement for these problems.
Good luck with your little guy

No more baths, topicals, powders, etc! His skin, his natural defensive organ to the outside world of pathogens and microbes, is broken. It’s irritated, it’s open, it’s angry, it’s infected. Flea and tick products won’t help with that, nor hydrogen peroxide (burns!), or borax (detergent?! on a dog?). Whenever the skin is compromised the last thing you want to do is expose it to further abrasive, corrosive agents.
Make that appointment as soon as you can. Heck, call and leave a message with your regular DVM or staff, or email them, if they have that capability. Some don’t utilize it, even this day in age.
He has, at a minimum, a bacterial infection, possibly puppy pyoderma or sebhorrea, and may have an ectoparasitic (topical parasite) infestation of demodex, normally mites that live in skin, but over-reproduce and spread when the host is stressed or has incomplete immunity, such as a puppy has. Or sarcoptes, parasitic mites foreign to dog’s healthy skin, contagious to other mammals (including YOU). Both need miticide and follicular flushing treatment to be eradicated.
If he has fleas and/or ticks most powders, dips, and shampoos are ineffective, health risks, wasted money and unsafe. Topical preventatives with EPA and/or FDA certification, rigorously tested by their pharmaceutical manufacturer are the safest, most effective options: Frontline Plus by Merial, K9 Advantix by Bayer (flea only Advantage also), Revolution by Pfizer (less effective flea prev, but good for heartworm, intestinal worm, and a couple tick species).

Forget the nasty comments re your question is too long they have no knowlege re animals and obviously cannot concentrate enought to read your question..Firstly and foremost if the pup came to you with its first shot the Breeder MUST waait 10-14 days for the pup to be immunized and sending it this early is pure negligence so l would be having a go at this so called breeder and in fact you should get some money back.
Re the eye, most likely cherry eye as we call it and it is not that a big operation but the Breeder would have had it in the line as it is usually hereditary so she or he was negligent.
Forget all the stuff you h ave used for the slin irritation and l must agree with a few other people it could and most likely is mange and they do not catch this overnight l can assure you so check with the breeder again. The vet needs to take a scraping to see what type of mange if it is mange so it can be treated correctly. There are actaully a lot of herbal remedies which you can use which l did with a pregnant female as could not use chemicals.
l do not think this is a food allergy as he wwould not be losing this much hair or having the stress you have mentioned.
Ring or write to the Breeder and before that check to see if they are actually registered with your Dog Controlling Body as if not you will never get any money back,if yes you need to write a legal letter explaining she was negligent in selling you a pup before the shot took affect plus it most likely had the beginnings of mange before you got is unless where you live there are animals that carry mange which in my country it is foxes and if memory serves me correctly l do not think you have foxes in Sth Africa but many animals that do carry mange.Get your pup to the vet ASAP and insist on a scraping and to me l would not be too keen in the vet if he did notpick this up when you first went there.
Stop all these chemicals it will and is too harsh for a puppy and your vet will recommend the appropriate shampoo and medication needed.Good luck and again forget the so called idiots who are only too ready to criticize people about ANYTHING instead of helping you.By the way nowdays you never need to use tick and flea shampoo as there are som many easier treatments you can use like Sentinel and others. You cannot pump this much chemicals into a puppy so stop it l know you are desperate but rely on a good vet only

i’m not going to say euthanize him. nobody likes to put down a beloved pet. he may have caught a disease or have a bug bit thats not a tick or flea. sorry i’m not very helpful. i dont know much about South Africa. look him over gently to see if you can see any infections or bites. try using a different brand of flea and tick powder/shampoo stuff.

i would stop washing him i so many chemicals can make the skin more icthy so just keep his paws bound when it gets bad and take him to the vet a soon as possible good luck…
