Skin problem with my little dog? 10 points!?
My Cavalier king charles has a severe skin problem. She has been to the vets who thinks its fleas. So i went home with anti-inflamatories and medicated shampoo. She was treated fully but has gotten worse. She is in terrible discomfort so i talked to the vet who says its hard to tell with skin what it could be. I think it could be sarcoptic or demodeptic mange- but deffinately not fleas. Anyway the vet gave us plenty of antibiotics and told me to keep using the medicated shampoo. So far, no improvement. I have other dogs and all of them are perfectly fine!! Even the cat shares the bed with her and he’s ok too. Any advise, tips or help guys? I cant stand to see her like this, it came on so suddenly too. Her skin is all scabby and crusty and she has a bit of hair loss.
The vet gave us an appointment again for next week, should i ask for a skin scraping?
Thanks
Allergies or mange. Get a skin scraping to rule out mange, but also test for food allergies. What are you feeding her? Many dogs are allergic to grains in dog food, or even some of the proteins, and it manifests as skin problems. I had a similar problem with my dog and tried everything for dry skin- supplements, oatmeal baths, flea tests and treatments, etc. Some of these helped, but it didn’t go away until i switched him to a higher quality food with no corn.
Good luck!

well the vet was right about it could be anything with skin. so yeah i would ask for a skin scraping. i had a dog like that and turns out, he was allergic to almost everything: grass, to much sun, fleas, and a bunch of stiuff
hope your pet gets better!

have you asked for an allergie test? or a mite test… alot of dog are allergic to corn, wheat, rice, chicken, turkey, beef….
and you using medication shampoo can sometimes make it worse.. it has tons of chimicals and if your bathjing all the time yoou could be stripping alot of his natural oils making the skin dry and irritated…

It isnt mange, or the cat would be able to catch it. One of my puppies i got a while back had some scabby crusty skin like you are describing and it was because while the previous owner had her, she got attacked by fire ants. it improved over time though.
Could be severe allergies too.

Definitely get a skin scraping. It will tell you if its mange or ringworm, etc. And if they find nothing in that than consider doing an allergy test. I’m actually suprised he didnt do one the first time.

I also had a dog with skin problems and the first vet I took her too had her on all kinds of medicine and shampoo that weren’t working. I got the opinions of a few more vets and the first question they asked was "did your vet change her diet?" They had not and that was the solution to her problem.
Moral: Get more than one opinion.

This could possibly be related to the proven fact that they are much more likely to get skin damage by sun exposure. This can occure when twins are formed and somehow join into one body.
