My dogs have been treated for sarcoptic mange recently, and we are being treated as if they have the plague, even though we are keeping our guys quarantined and we wouldn’t dream of putting anyone’s dog at risk. How long after treatment can our dog’s be around other dogs, and how long does it take for someone to find out that their dog has contracted it (one of our friends has dogs, and although our dogs have not been around their dogs, they are concerned that my husband, who visited them outside of their home and away from their dogs twice before our dogs were diagnosed, may have put their dogs at risk).

I noticed when responding about gloves that this is causing you a lot grief so I hope this helps:

This can take a while to resolve so you are going to have to be patient. This can be a lingering problem (possibly months) where you need to give your pet many treatments and even after there isn’t evidence of the mites you may want to follow up with a few more treatments to make sure. The best way to diagnose/see if your pet still has mites is a skin scraping. However, it is possible to have false negatives – your pet has these mites, but the test comes back negative. The most safe and effective treatment is Revolution and Lyme-sulfur dips. The protocol for these treatments are as follows: Revolution – apply every 2 weeks for 3 treatments. Lyme-sulfur – dip once weekly for 6 weeks. Some vets also prescribe prednisone, a steroid which can compromise the immune system, to alleviate the intense itching. In addition to a protocol such as it is recommended that you disinfect the environment which these pets have lived because these mites can survive in the environment for up to 21 days. You would want to use an environmental pesticide. You must treat all animals in the household and check yourselves for any itchy rashes. This may sound exterme and most cases don’t necessarily need this intense of a work-up, but it is better to cover everything than allow a more serious situation to arise. I hope this information is helpful and I would discuss this more with your vet because every mange case is handled differently. Also, I know you were hesitant to use ivermectin, but it is very effective and is usually given every 2 weeks for 3-6 treatments – just in case you would like to know. This can happen to anyone and by just trying to be informed you are doing more than many who encounter this problem. Since these pests can cause such discomfort for pets and humans there tends to be an increased concern. While it is possible that your husband put your friend’s dogs at risk, it more than likely didn’t happen. These mites do not reproduce on humans as they do on animals therefore you and your husband could possibly get a rash from those moving from your dogs to you, but they wouldn’t multiply. Since humans can be carry these mites it is best to isolate your pets, as you are and i know it is hard, until the problem has subsided. I know that it isn’t realistic to not touch your pets while this problem is lingering, but try to just pet them and make sure to wash your hands throughly when done. Best of luck, things should begin to look better soon.

Demodex mange is a skin complaint in dogs that’s due to them having a reaction to miniscule parasitic mites. These mites are passed from mummy to puppy dog and are sometimes kept in hand by the dog’s immune response. But in some young puppies this does not occur and the mites cause inflammation, scaly inflamed skin and alopecia. Read on and discover a home remedy for dog mange.

Mange sometimes starts off as a local problem on the young dog’s face. You will see 1 or 2 express areas of irritation round his eyes and nose. Astragalus, Echinacea and arabinogalactans can be useful. These additions must be given to your dog orally. Ensure the product you are picking is for topical use. Use caution, there are some necessary oils that are un-diluted and they can be deadly to your dog. When you realize your dog has mange, take additional measures to make certain he’s clean. The most preferred treatment is Ivermectin which is applied to your pet’s skin by your vet. Treatment for mange in pussies is extraordinarily effective in almost all cases. Cortisone can also be prescribed to help with the itching that your pussy-cat will have.

However, there are still some things that most pussy-cat owners should do with this condition as both preemptive as well as treatment conditions, and that’s bolstering them with vitamins. Vitamin C is particularly helpful for this condition as it decreases the consequences of any potential allergy making substances from mange together with acting as a protein agent for the skin. They may do this because scratching can cause secondary skin issues like bacterial contagions. Common treatments include administering prescribed medications, using anti-fungal shampoos or dips, and maybe applications of iodine. The treatment for mange is dependent on the precise diagnosis. Keeping your dog clean will also go a long way at stopping skin related issues like mange, dermatitis, and hot spots. This isn’t a life-endangering sicknesses and can be simply cured if some cares are correctly taken.

Also, dogs that do not practice good cleanliness are more susceptible to mange than any other pets. And the simplest way to stop mange is to make certain your pet gets the best attention both in its cleanliness and food habits. Give your dog the most delicious food around so its body defense system gets stronger by the day. And make certain your dog gets its daily bath and regular grooming too so as to ensure that no mites or bugs would even try to come near to it.

Most dog owners will handle mange at one time or another. There are 3 distinct kinds of mange, 2 of which need vet intervention. Cheyletiella is the least major form of mange. It brings itching and light dandruff over the dog’s body. However when mange is present then it usually calls for a series of chemical dips which are not agreeable for either the dog or the individual giving the dip. A good medicated shampoo will become successful in treating this mild case of mange.

You can help the immunity mechanism and the itchy skin by adding a small spoon of olive oil to his food every day and also squashing up a vitamin E supplement. Ultimately , if you have got any other pets in the house you want to treat them as well whether or not they do not have symptoms as mange is highly contagious. Naturally you are going to need to do an intensive cleaning of the house and anything that your dog touched to kill off any mites he may have shed. First off it must tackle the underlying reason for mange, which is the tiny parasitic mange mites. Second , it must ease his inflamed skin. And thirdly it additionally needs to raise his immune reaction so that he may help to fight off the mange mites himself. Till you know which version of Mange your dog has it’s really important to keep him secluded from the remainder of the family. The best dog mange treatments will need to take on all 3 of these if they’re to have a chance of getting on top of the issue.

Mange is due to minute mites which will consistently bite your dog. When the affected dog has Mange the living mites can lay twenty to thirty eggs. These eggs can hatch anywhere between eight to seventeen days. The products you choose should be endorsed for topical use. Mange is due to mites in your dog’s skin, so so as to treat mange effectively, you should get shot of the mites. Some pure concentrated oils are harmful, so be certain to read the instructions and cares before applying oils to your dog’s skin. One cheap and efficient way to kill off mites is to spread a slim layer of petrol jelly on your dog’s fur.

i have 2 puppies one siberian husky who was born july9th and a siberian husky/german shepard mix who was born june5th, i just found out that the brother of the siberian husky has mange nd so i know the sister has it since her face’s fur is falling a little and she plays a lot with my other puppy the mixed one so i know she probably got it she has no signs of it but never know, can any1 tell me a real good home cure for it? or something cheap? i have 3 kids so its real important for me
Additional Details
The brother of the siberian husky has sarcoptic mange I gave him 2 another person who got it checked todays

There is no ‘home remedy’ for sarcoptic mange. It’s also highly contagious, so expect the other puppy to pick it up as well. Even if he doesn’t have it, the vet will probably want to treat him, too. The standard protocol is to treat all dogs in the household if one is diagnosed.

Your dog needs to see a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. Explain that money is VERY tight and you would like to know what the least expensive, but still effective, option will be to treat.

Here’s an excellent link on sarcoptic mange, including possible treatments:

When you see a dog with mange you instantly think it has been abused in some form and that your puppy will never look like that. Mange is a condition due to miniscule mites that bore into the skin of a dog and live their lives about 1 to 2 millimeters deep. Well essentially mange occurs in the very best of houses and your dog is just as susceptible as any other. As ghastly as the dog looks, and as uncomfortable he’s with the itching, the genuine threat is infection. Some of the signals of mange are exaggerated scratching.

With all that scratching going on, it’ll cause sores on the skin. The skin will also become dry, crusty, thick and wrinkled. Mites incline to burrow under the dogs skin and will cause the dog to lose hair in that area. Mange is due to minute mites which will consistently bite your dog. These eggs can hatch anywhere between eight to seventeen days. When the infected dog has Mange the living mites can lay twenty to thirty eggs.

There are various symptoms for each illness, condition and infection out there so it is critical if you’ve got any concerns or your dog is showing symptoms to search out medical assistance for your loved family pet. The different evidence of Mange are : Hair Loss-this could be a tiny or a lot, Itching and scratching-This often only happens in the area affected, Red spots, Blisters, and Infection. Not merely will this kill the mites by suffocating them, it could also offer a relaxing touch to your dog’s inflamed skin. Use more than one application of petrol jelly if required. A good medicated shampoo will become successful in treating this mild case of mange. Since dog mange can rapidly become quite significant, for most satisfactory results, it is important to begin to use homemade remedies as fast as you notice the start of a difficulty. Sarcoptic is another kind of mange which is more significant, but simply treatable if diagnosed in time. So a large amount of caution should be used when providing treatment for and handling a dog which has been diagnosed as having this sort of mange. The dog will have wild itching and patchy alopecia.

Everyone on here sees these harebrained home remedies that people suggest as a cure-all as opposed to the veterinarian.

Things like motor oil for mange, gatorade for a guess-diagnosis of Parvovirus, chicken soup for snake bites, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Are there any out there that actually WORK?
[Of course there is no substitution for veterinary treatment!]

Best answer:

Answer by Shelter dogs say spay & neuter!
I, personally, don’t think so. Especially Gatorade for Parvo and chicken soup for snake bites.. That’s completely ridiculous. Don’t people realize that these home remedies probably won’t work and there pet will die? Some people will believe anything.

My dogs have had sarcoptic mange for 5 weeks (didn’t confirm the dx until last week when the heartgard injection worked, vets suspected fungal infection but the culture took 3 weeks and it was negative) Anyway, 3 days ago their breath began to STINK, both dogs. I thought maybe just a bad breath day IDK. Their teeth are sparkly white thanks to RMBs. No diet change except a month ago I added milk thistle.
I know sarcoptic mange causes an odor to the body, but is it to the breath too, or any other ideas what is going on please?
It kind of like a rotten garlic smell. (they haven’t gotten garlic in a month) It’s so strong that if they lick my hand, my hand stinks.
The vet never called me back from yesterday..I suspect he will monday. But does anyone know?
(their bloodwork was all fine, no tick diseases. one has a problem with his liver but my other doesn’t and both breath smells)
thanks
their diet hasn’t changed..they eat a prey model raw food diet. mostly it’s beef. I am supplementing with vitamins and that’s new in the last month but other than that nothing. no sores inside their mouth..
hm. I have given them sulfur orally (homeopathy)
dogs bodies are designed to eat raw meat (carnivores) they’ve been eating it for 2 years. the sulfur wasn’t much, 1 pellet every week.
J- I used to,and yeah I smelled that too, but this is much much worse. I stopped the garlic for about a month.

do you feed brewer’s yeast + garlic tablets? My dog has gotten them every day for a year and ever since then she has had bad breath. It doesn’t matter what quality of dog food i feed her. . .breath is still yuck :-/

Most dog owners will handle mange at one time or another. There are 3 distinct kinds of mange, 2 of which need vet intervention. Mange is due to mites, where each kind of mange is due to a different species of mites. Cheyletiella is the least major kind of mange. Sadly only about twenty p.c. of the mites are on the surface of the skin meaning there’s an eight out of ten probability that the dumping won’t show any mites.

Bald patches of skin with blemish like bumps are also common with mange. Infrequently there’ll be a yellowish crust round the bald spot especially on the ears. Treatment for mange The best treatment is prevention and that implies using products like Frontline and Advantix which act as mite repellents. Finally your dog will die if no treatment has been provided they can die of a secondary bacterial infection, dehydration, or just pure exhaustion. I’ve seen cases where folk think because it’s the Summer their dog is just shedding their coat, but the final result is a loss of a lot of their hair. The secondary Bacterial Infection is generally the primary source for the other probabilities, the infection can spread. Mange is due to mites in your dog’s skin, so so as to treat mange effectively, you need to dump the mites. If you want to find out more about Mange and other dog health issues and symptoms go to Dog Health Guide [http://www.doghealthguide.info]. One cheap and effective way to kill off mites is to spread an insubstantial layer of petrol jelly on your dog’s fur.

Use more than one application of petrol jelly if required. Since dog mange can swiftly become quite significant, for most impressive results, it is important to begin to use homemade treatments as fast as you notice the start of an issue. The mites will reproduce and when that occurs, there’ll be a strong odour coming from the area affected. Your pet could also develop blisters and bleeding. Treating your dog naturally is always the least risky way to go, but in dreadful cases, it is smart to make a trip to your vet. If you suspect that your dog has mange, you will be wanting to boost your pets immunological response with herbal additions.

Dog mange is a most likely big problem. Signs of mange include unwarranted itching and scratching as well as fur loss. Luckily, there are efficient home-made treatments for mange that will provide your pet with relief from the itching, scratching and loss of fur linked with mange. Since dog mange can be significant, if you spot the leading indicators of mange you’ll be wanting to treat it straight away.

Mange typically starts off as a local problem on the young dog’s face. If you can utilise a home cure for dog mange it will also help to clear up the difficulty as he gets a little older. You may see 1 or 2 precise areas of irritation round his eyes and nose. The home cure will ease his skin and help to brace his immunological reaction so that he will be able to fight back against these mites himself. When the affected dog has Mange the living mites can lay twenty to thirty eggs. These eggs can hatch anywhere between 8 to seventeen days.

The different indications of Mange are : Hair Loss-this could be a small or a lot, Itching and scratching-This sometimes only happens in the areas affected, Red spots, Blisters, and Infection. There are several symptoms for each illness, condition and infection out there so it’s very important if you have got any concerns or your dog is showing symptoms to find medical assistance for your cherished family pet. However when mange is present then it often calls for a collection of chemical dips which aren’t pleasant for either the dog or the individual giving the dip. Finally , if you’ve got any other pets in the house you want to treat them as well regardless of whether they do not have symptoms as mange is highly contagious. You can help the immunological response and the itchy skin by adding a teaspoon of olive oil to his food every day and also squashing up a vitamin E supplement. Naturally you are going to need to do an extensive cleaning of the house and anything that your dog touched to kill off any mites he could have shed.

This treatment should be done each 3 weeks for three months. You are supposed to mix four oz into one gallon of water and wet the dog’s hair and skin absolutely. I will not tell you how splendidly this treatment worked. With this dip, I also used an oatmeal-based shampoo and an itch spray.
