Hi my jack russell puppy of 8 weeks has a bad case of sarcoptic mange…i rescued him from living outside in a area with alot of bigger dogs so he has had a rough start to life, i took him in 5 days ago and notcied his skin, someone suggested it be stress related, it didnt clear up so he was at the vets today and we had it confirmed with a skin scraping….he is to start treatment 2morrow by being “bathed” the vet says he needs this 3-4 times….what else will he need?? He mentioned anti bs?? Also how long before he starts to feel better as it breaks my heart to see him in pain the poor little thing…Because hes had it once will he have it again??

I’d been to 4 vets and they didn’t even dx with sarc mange. Someone here told me it was probably sarcoptic mange when nothing the vets did helped it. One vet wanted to do more allergy testing but I convinced him to rule out sarcoptic mange first.

Years ago I had a dog that was so itchy for MONTHS that we nearly euthanized him to stop his misery. A skin punch test didn’t reveal any mange of either sort. We eventually soaked him in baby oil as a last ditch effort and it alleviated the itching which even the steroids the Vet had given failed to do. We left it on him overnight and then washed him in Dawn. A year later we updated his vaccinations and discovered that THAT was what had caused the original issue. Another soaking in baby oil and Dawn bath and all was well. He was never vaccinated again and never again had that issue.

I would consider it contagious until the treatment is over. At the shelter we work in, we usually treat the dogs for 6 weeks and then perform another skin scraping to make sure that it is negative.

try scratching her ear flap on the inside with your finger nail. if her foot starts scratching or it makes her feel good then she probrablly has sarcoptic mange. or some kind of mange i can never remember which. but its a quick and easy test. then go to the vet for skin scrapings for a definite diagnosis.

* try the edge of the ear on the inside too, also known as the pinna*

this really does work. but its not a diagnosis by itself. its just a quick and easy way to rationalize a skin scraping. you still need the medications.

OK got her in the vet today and I was right about the mange, just not the right kind of mange. She has “RED” mange and she got an infection on top of it from scratching. She’s on med’s and is scheduled for dips. Thank you all.

Not sure what you mean by “blisters”. It sounds like a skin infection perhaps. It’s best if your vet does a skin scrape to determine whether it is sarcoptes or demodectic mites. Treatment is different. Or, it could be a bad staph infection and might need antibiotic therapy. Meanwhile, you can bathe her in a gentle oatmeal shampoo made for dogs, using cool water. That might be soothing. Call your vet tomorrow and maybe they can recommend a safe antihistamine until you can get her in. Maybe they can see her before the weekend?

Does anyone know about this treatment for mange “sarcoptic” ?? I bought some today because I have tried the 21 day treatment of Ivermectin with NO luck..I’m just curious if it will work as well as the co-op people told me it would..??

best bet is medicated dips done at your vet…
mange is VET worthy and ivermectin often doesnt work for mange…you need dips…

its definately mange on the big new gelding. I took a skin scraping myself and it is mange,not demodetric either my dog had that as a puppy.
