This video is being uploaded to show how vicious (or not) Louise is. Louise followed my wife and our dog home from a walk the night before our wedding. No tags, no chips. Left on the street, likely, because of her demodectic mange (I mispronounce it as dendritic in the video because I’m cool and never make mistakes). It’s being treated (little squirt of medicine in the mouth once a day). Because she can not be left alone with our dog at this time, and because of the nasty heat wave, we have had to board her at our vet’s for the last couple days. That, along with the bills for her medicine and diagnosis, has drained out all of the money that was given to us as wedding gifts and we have no choice but to bring her to a shelter if we can’t find an adopter or foster ASAP.

Check out some stills of her at http://picasaweb.google.com/aandyd/Louise

My dogs have sarcoptic mange which took 4 weeks to get the vets to believe. (they thought allergies or were awaiting a culture that took 3 weeks to come back negative for fungal infection)

I started treating them with sulfur (homeopathy) a couple weeks ago. It didn’t help yet.

the vet said Ivermectim (liquid injection of a much stronger dose than the heartgard pill) and Revolution for my border collie mix (he’s getting a genetic test first today)

He also said I can try the white sulfur dip I got.

For a dog with a liver problem, does Revolution at high doses sound dangerous?

Vets don’t believe medicines will hurt..but obviously they do..it’s a pesticide.

But at this point, I hate waiting any longer for treatment and am tempted to just ask the vet to give him Revolution. His ears are bloody and hurt, he sleeps with his nose pressed on the floor because it’s too painful to lay on either ear.

Should I just have the Revolution or wait?? (the chances he has the gene are pretty low for border collies, like less than 3%. And yes I asked my vet this when he called me last night…and he said it was up to me.

Also someone on another dog group said that sarcoptic mange mites can cause liver problems. Since I guess the vets in my area don’t have much experience with sarcoptic mange, and my vet doesn’t know what is causing it, has anyone else heard of that before or had it happen? Thank you!!
sigh….vet appointment IS today in 3 hours…………..obviously vets aren’t taking care of my dogs proactively and leaving all the decisions up to me because they have NO CLUE what my dogs problems are! I would LOVE to just leave it in my vets hands..

My question is should I just use the Revolution for my dog, or will it hurt his already problem liver which the vets have no idea why his liver has a problem to begin with.
I didn’t try the white sulfur yet..it comes in tomorrow
I actually like this vet:) I just wish he wasn’t leaving decisions up to me because he doesn’t know what is best or what’s wrong anyway. this is 3rd vet
Alesi, I’m having bloodwork sent to Dr. jean Dodds today when I go to the vets, her lab is supposed to be good at reading blood I asked the vet what he thinks he said it’s possible there was a mistake with the lab he used…

I’d start the revolution in a heart beat. You can have him checked for the MDR1 gene through WSU. However, we have used this drug on many border collie, ausssie and other herding breeds and sight hounds with very few issues.

The decision is ultimately the owner’s in medical issues.

Dr. Dodds does not test for the mdr1 gene to my knowledge.

Sarcoptic Mange Treatment

Well my vet won’t treat it until the slide results come back in 2 weeks.

My dogs are itching constantly and their hair is falling out on their ears and backs of their front legs. They are also itching their chest. Their skin is scaley.

I don’t want to wait 2 weeks to treat them so I’m trying home remedies in the meantime. I’m already using gentian violet (antifungal) and put vitamin E liquid on the scaley skin, but so far it’s not helping.

More about Sarcoptic Mange

Please any suggestions because I am tempted to just go to another vet but my current vet said the reason he doens’t just want to treat it is because the medicine is harsh and he wants to be sure it’s sarcoptic mange or another fungal infection.

Thank you for ANY help
When he first checked the skin scrape right after he did it, he said all he saw was normal skin bacteria (staph i think) but then a few days later he said the slide changed colors and was fungal..i don’t understand why he can’t take a hair sand check for mites or something! and Ms. Manners…Im not sure..on my heels there are little bumps that look like poison ivy or mosquitoe bites but I do go walking through woods and fields so it could really be poison ivy. it itches but not terrible like my dogs are itching.
and my dogs don’t have little bumps, theirs is just like really scaley scabby skin and hair loss
my dog is a border collie mix
thank you for the link Jessie. ok if my vet doesn’t call me back by today (i called friday) i’ll see a new vet because I really think this is what it is..and if the treatment won’t hurt them i think that’s better than letting them scratch themselves raw, it just looks so uncomfortable for them
He hasn’t returned my call…I think he’s mad that I never picked up the antibiotics for my other dog, but i don’t want her on them if there’s no bacteria infection.

If it is sarcoptic mange, you are dealing with a mite, and there is no effective home treatment.

I know itching dogs are driving you nuts, but wait for his diagnosis. Is this sarcoptic mange?
(I dont know why it would take 2 weeks to diagnose sarcoptic mange….maybe they have to culture the fungus to eliminate that possibility).

Are you seeing any bites on you?
I know my mother was bitten by the mites when her dogs had sarcoptic mange.
That would be a clear indication that you are dealing with sarcoptic mange.
*****
The mites can be very hard to see, even with a skin scraping.
Sometimes a vet will just treat the dog for sarcoptic mange in order to eliminate it as a possibility. Why dont you ask him if he would be willing to do that? How to treat sarcoptic mange? Choose the best sarcoptic mange treatment! treat sarcoptic mange now!

Prevent Bed Bugs And Stay Worry Free

Prevent bed bugs are one of the most annoying critters on earth. They’re little pests that suck human blood for their survival. Though the frequent information is the fact that bed bugs are too small to be seen, it is not entirely true. Several adult bed bugs mature to five mm long and they are visible on the human eye. These insects generally seep into our homes during the night, thus can make it all of the more difficult for us to distinguish them. So should you be thinking how you can prevent bed bugs from feasting in your blood, read on.
Bed bugs normally take refuge in places that are warm and have enough human contact. For instance, the bed, the couch, pillows or mattresses are strongholds for bed bugs.

When you have determined the locations in which the bed bugs can possibly gather, use a fantastic and effective pesticide on these locations. You should target all your furniture with insecticide as a way to make sure that the bedbugs get eradicated. Therefore, as a way to clean them out entirely, it’s very best to use a combination of insecticide spray and insecticide dust.

So that you can prevent the these insects from escaping your insecticide onslaught, you are able to cover the bed bug infested places in plastic then utilize the insecticide.

In the event you wish to know the best way to avoid them, you need to follow particular instructions.

Above all, you must repair any cracks inside your windows so that you can stop them from coming into your home. As soon as this standard safety measure is performed, you have to get rid of any old furniture which is utterly useless and is decaying. Such furniture often proves to be a safe haven for bed bugs.

Cleanliness is a great way to prevent bed bugs!

Cleanliness is a great way of preserving your house bed bugs free. Go for regular cleaning drives and keep your home free from bed bugs.
Another thing that you need to pay great attention to is that you must not bring swarmed items into your home. Bed bugs can attack your home anytime. Also, you should be especially cautious while traveling. Look into the mattresses and linings of the beds and pillows inside the hotel room where you stay for bed bugs. Perform a thorough check of the room you are about to stay in and if doable, ask the hotel to clean your room with disinfectants prior to you actually check in just to prevent bed bugs.

In response to the ever increasing EPA Pest Management System “chemical-consciousness” in Lancaster, PA, I decided to perform more and more of my services from the outside of homes and businesses. “Is this justified?”, one might consult. Prior to I reply to that question, I’d like to address some thing which concerns me even more: homeowner extermination.

In case you don’t mind, I’d like to cut to the chase here. Almost all people are conscious the EPA adjusts which goods could be “sprayed”, “fogged”, or “dusted” inside an occupied structure. And therefore as one may expect, that does not mean the products are being employed in accordance with label specifications, therefore user mistake could produce excessive exposure problems. As a specialist, I’ve seen much more toxicity issues with those who have pest problems before I ever arrive to the picture. Now, I would like to award them because of their courage because they use cans of empty bug spray, “homeopathic techniques” such as red pepper, moth balls, chewing gum, you name it (and I’ve observed it!). But I really get concerned once I see that in their enthusiasm, they have exposed their family members to unnecessary amounts of insecticides or any other household goods that are not even labled for bugs (or rodents).

Let me use an illustration of a situation with community access to expert pest products: Prior to the EPA Pest Management System took Chlordane off the marketplace during the 1980′s, it was available over-the-counter, in concentrate. That means that any person had entry to a chemical which was active within the soil for 25 years on the diluted rate! I’ve met people who proudly featured killing a Carpenter Ant nest within their backyard tree stump by putting Chlordane concentrate right on the colony. Even though this almost certainly doesn’t mean anything to the average person, someone familiar with the pest control business is cringing properly about now–this means potential ground contaminants for years, killing anything from beneficial insects to fish in nearby streams! The EPA most likely did the proper thing, believing that if they produced it restricted use (for commercial use only) a black market could be created considering that no one could imagine life without having Chlordane, especially for termite problems. I point here is that toxicity has always been a lot greater with public usage, even when the merchandise had been a lot more harmful.

My other q was deleted in “violation” so I can’t reply anything to this one…

Does anyone recognize thisskin problem, on my dogs ears that are itchy, there’s hair loss and it’s scaley and very dry, pink color and scabs, and in one area on his ear (outer flap side) it’s grey.like a grey patch.

The backs of his front legs have hair loss and scabbed and bleeding..very dry scales again.

His stomach has small round un-raised red spots that are VERY itchy..there’s about 4 i found on his stomach..his stomach is not scaley or dry though.

He has been to vets. But seriously if this sounds like sarcoptic mange, I’m just going to get themedicine myself and treat it because no vet is considerng it and no other medicine is helping. He’s miserable and lethargic. I can’t treat him with revolution though because he’s part collie breed..if this sounds like sarcoptic mange..does anyone know what else besides reolution that is ok for border collies? thank you.
my mom went away on vacation with my aunt…and took my camera. I have an older pic
this was 2 weeks ago i think

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm186/shelteranimalsrule/031.jpg

I’ll try getting a pic with my cell phone cam
my cells cam is not good.
this is the spot on his belly

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm186/shelteranimalsrule/hspotbelly.jpg

the spot looks more red than in the pic.

this is is his ear

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm186/shelteranimalsrule/hear.jpg

that grey in the middle isn’t hair, that’s his skin
AH THERE ***IS** A SMELL!!!!
it says a smell for sarcoptic mange.
although i think his stomach looks more like ringworm…
but this smell..is sort of like mold
wait that’s fungal then isn’t it.
i hope the test results will be in tomorrow.
what I read here though

http://www.canismajor.com/dog/mange1.html

about sarcoptic mange sounds exactly what is going on though..
i’ve only read Ivermectin to treat it, not interceptor…..
WAIT one site says interceptor does treat sarcoptic mange…OMG I AM giving my dogs the interceptor tonight then.
oh no. their interceptor expired 9/2009…
I read this
“Newer treatments include Interceptor, also used as a heartworm preventative, administered daily…it has to be continued for three months. ”
so i guess i have to ask a vet anyway because i don’t know if i’m supposed to give a heartworm pill every day for 3 months that doesn’t sound right.

Still no results on the fungal infection? It really sounds like Ring worm to me…

I know you already did a skin scraping to rule out the Mange though – And then they decided it was Fungal, not mange, am I right?

The odds of both of your dogs having sarcoptic mange is very slim.

Can you post pics of your dogs problems areas?

Here is something that helped me learn about S-Mange:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_sarcoptic_mange.html

The scabs on the ears could also be eczema.

***EDIT: Mitaban dips are VERY TOXIC!

**EDIT: Yes, I wasn’t trying to be rude, so sorry! Yes they are VERY toxic and almost NEVER used. I wanted to point that out because she is more of a “homeopathic” dog owner if you’ve read her other questions

Those dips are NASTY and only for extreme EXTREME cases.

**************
Found another great resource. It has info on Mange, and Ring Worm like I had suggested earlier…
