Hannah

Hannah is a very sweet 5 year-old Basset/Beagle mix girl who’s had a rough time of it lately. She came into a rural county dog pound as a stray. Her skin was in terrible condition. She was diagnosed with sarcoptic mange which is a painful, very itchy skin condition that requires dips and medication to get rid of. In most shelters, this girl wouldn’t stand a chance but the staff at this shelter really wanted to help her so contacted Canine Lifeline for assistance. Hannah came to Canine Lifeline on the 4th of July weekend and is now ready to make a brand new start. Her mange is gone and she’s feeling and looking great. Hannah is an incrediby sweet and mellow dog and now that she’s feeling better, is enjoying playing with other dogs too. She and Marty, the young Beagle/Rottie mix male, love to run and play together. You can tell she’s so grateful to have been helped and getting a second chance at a better life than she’s had in the past. Hannah seems to be housetrained and really enjoys curling up on a comfy blanket in her crate. She does fine with cats too. She’s going to make such a good friend for a lucky family! . Hannah is spayed, heartworm negative and on monthly preventative, up-to-date on vaccinations, and on Frontline Plus flea and tick preventative. All Canine Lifeline adoptions come with a two-week trial period to make sure it’s a great match before the adoption is finalized. Please email Barb at bwible@roadrunner.com if you’re interested in Hannah.

a pet I rehomed gave my pet sarcoptic mange?

Ok my ex boyfriend couldn’t take care of his dog so I took her.
I tried to rehome her. I never could find a good home for her.

Well back in January I found her a home I thought. They seemed to love her and she stayed with them until about 4 weeks ago.
They called and said they couldn’t take care of her anymore. So we went and got her.

Well as soon as we got her home she was itching and scratching furiously. We assumed fleas (we saw fleas on her) so we treated her with frontline immediately and gave her children’s benadryl.

Then my cat started itching so I was like damnit now the cat has fleas!!!

..Well..they were both still itching even after flea meds. So we took the dog to the vet.

Sarcoptic mange.

We took the cat to the vet.

Sarcoptic mange.

I am furious now. Those people gave me back a dog with the mange that has now infested my cat.

I really want to say something to them.. should I? Or should I just let it go?

I can’t prove they gave it to her other than the fact she was itching furiously within hours of us getting her home from their house, and NONE of my cats had ANY fleas, itching, rashes, hair loss, ticks, or anything at all until we brought back the dog.

You should confront her previous owners in person with the fact that the dog had Sarcoptic mange and make them pay for the flea treatment, vet and any thing else you had to pay for because of that for both you cat and dog.Good luck

How do I cope today, its not?

So today is the day my mom wants to get rid of my cats.
The landlord comes into town next week and we aren’t suppose to have them and they want to move back into their house soon.

I am so pissed off.
I’ve been crying.
And heartache is real and it hurts, I kid you not.
I don’t even want to look at the effing dog either, I hate that dog so much. When he was a puppy he had giardia, sarcoptic mange, and slew of other problems and my mom kept him, he’s pissed and crapped on the carpet and my mom has kept him, he nearly attacked me and my mom kept him.
Now, he gets to stay and my cats have to go and its hard because he is an adorable dog too and I feel like such a jerk for hating him.

Should I spend time with the cats or stay away, which will be harder on me in the end?
She couldn’t have picked a worse day to do this, I have to study today for an exam over CRS, my states laws.

What should I do?
Right, she HAS to get rid of them TODAY. Today is the lastest she can do it.
I can’t simply get an apartment or find somewhere else to live today.
She has a choice. We are moving anyways, we COULD keep them.

I’m very sorry about your cats, but it’s time to move on. It’s sad, yes, but your life will go on, and when you get your own place, you can get as many cats as you like. It sounds like your mother doesn’t have a choice in the matter, so it’s not really her fault.

The family has itchy bottoms. We think it might be pinworms?

I thought my itchy bottom was hemorrhoids. Then I noticed the family itching. Three weeks had gone by when I called the Doctor. She called in meds which cost about $40 for two treatments, one week apart. The itching improved, but didn’t go away. I got two more treatments this time over the counter ($20), 1 week apart. We still have itchy bottoms, a total of about 2 months. The doctor said it could be strep. But I don’t think that is possible since none of us has had strep throat. I wash towels every day, change underwear twice a day, vacuum weekly and sheets once a week. I tried looking with a flash light on my daughter and didn’t see any worms. Is it possible that the meds is not working or could this be something else? We also have a high efficiency washing machine. Could the machine not be cleaning the sheets? My husband doesn’t want to spend any more money or go to the doctor.

We also got a rescue dog that has had skin issues. The vet said that dogs and cats don’t get pin worms. He was tested for sarcoptic mange, but came up negative.

Ok, this is gross, but if it were pinworms, you can see little worms either around your rectum or when you deficate.

Sarcoptic Mange?

My friends dog has several spost on his back that oose clear to white liquid and he constantly chews on them, she has tried meds for hotspots and even switched his food. he doesnt ahve fleas and hes the only dog that has it. she has another dog and 2 cats, one cat has sevral scabs and her hair is falling out. could they have sarcoptic mange?

The spots oozing white liquid could be a sign of Atopic Dermatitis a.k.a. Moist Eczema. Your friend should get a professional opinion from the vet. If it is Moist Eczema, it is easily treated by a vet.

The following page will give you plenty of information on dog skin disorders including Atopic Dermatitis and all forms of Mange in dogs. I’ve also included a page on other common skin problems caused from allergies, etc.

Skin problem with my little dog? 10 points!?

My Cavalier king charles has a severe skin problem. She has been to the vets who thinks its fleas. So i went home with anti-inflamatories and medicated shampoo. She was treated fully but has gotten worse. She is in terrible discomfort so i talked to the vet who says its hard to tell with skin what it could be. I think it could be sarcoptic or demodeptic mange- but deffinately not fleas. Anyway the vet gave us plenty of antibiotics and told me to keep using the medicated shampoo. So far, no improvement. I have other dogs and all of them are perfectly fine!! Even the cat shares the bed with her and he’s ok too. Any advise, tips or help guys? I cant stand to see her like this, it came on so suddenly too. Her skin is all scabby and crusty and she has a bit of hair loss.
The vet gave us an appointment again for next week, should i ask for a skin scraping?
Thanks

Allergies or mange. Get a skin scraping to rule out mange, but also test for food allergies. What are you feeding her? Many dogs are allergic to grains in dog food, or even some of the proteins, and it manifests as skin problems. I had a similar problem with my dog and tried everything for dry skin- supplements, oatmeal baths, flea tests and treatments, etc. Some of these helped, but it didn’t go away until i switched him to a higher quality food with no corn.

Good luck!

I need help to give this kitten a fighting chance. :<?

I found a kitten on my porch yesterday in horrible condition. It was pouring rain and the mother never came back for her. So I brought her inside.
I estimate that she’s almost 8 weeks old because almost all of her baby teeth are in, and he can eat dry food. Although this is my fist kitten.

She was born in the wild and was homeless, so I know she is not had any vaccinations. I am almost positive she has sarcoptic mange. She has oxidized blood on her face, balding patches, and the skin on her tail is so crusted over it has split in several locations. My husband set her on my tummy last night and now I have little itchy bumps there, leading me to think it’s sarcoptic.

I want to give this kitten a chance, I figure since I don’t have a cat I can take care of her.
I have rather low income at the moment however. Is there a low income vet? And what is the averarage cost of vaccinations and mange treatment? I want to make sure I have the money for treatment when I walk in.

Thank you!
I live in Tampa, Florida. Near riverview.

For a home remedy, give her a bath in the bathroom basin. Barely warm water, baby shampoo or other mild shampoo.. Spoon the water on to get her used to it before soaping up and dunking to rinse. You will have to hold her with one hand and do all the work with the other.
The shampoo will kill some insects on her. Any fleas will float up when you push her underwater (except the mouth and nose). Scabs will soften up or come off.
When she is rinsed, dry her thoroughly with a towel. Some people say use a hairdryer, but most cats hate the sound of it.
Get worming tablets from a pet shop or supermarket. There are easy-to-adminster chewable ones. This will get rid of any worms, which can also be associated with fleas.
Get some Aloe Vera cream or jelly, also from the supermarket. The kind sold to go on sunburn would do. Put this on the damaged spots to soothe the skin.
If she does have mange, she would be scratching and chewing at the affected areas just about all the time. If washing and creams don’t stop her scratching, then you do need to go to the vet for better treatment. If you think you’ve caught it, go to the doctor for a cream for yourself and use it on the cat as well.(but don’t do this with tablets, as you can’t work out a safe dosage).
Feed her small meals 4 times a day, soft food (tinned is ok, fresh is better, leftover cooked meat ok too), but leave out some dry food to nibble in between. Give her milk (I use it diluted with about 30% water) as it is very nutritious. If her stools don’t go very soft from it, she can handle it (some cats can’t).
Until you clear her of having anything infectious, give her her own towel and bedding. Sit her on the towel on your lap or on your couch. If she likes you, let her have a worn Tshirt that smells of you, as part of her bed.
Around 14 weeks is usual for the first shots. That or the repeat visit would be suitable times for neutering. Cat protection societies sometimes do discount spaying, but I’m not sure about other veterinary work.

Seems we have a toxic Italian Greyhound – help!?

and we need some clues. The vet he is at hasn’t any idea. Here is the skinny:

We had Roman for about 2 1/2 weeks – he was to be our new pup. [I have 1 other Iggy and 2 cats]. Zak has selective animal allergies but had no issues for well over a week after we brought Roman home. Suddenly Zak got a URI and one day broke out in hives after hugging Roman. Weird. Roman ate what Reno [my other Iggy] does [Purina One with Nutra wet mix], ran around with Reno – did what my other does. Zak had NO issues at all, then all of a sudden major issues with breathing and the hive thing.. So off Roman goes to his new home…SHE also developed breathing issues and hives within a day of having him. She has NO animal allergies. Off Roman goes again [poor Memo, at this point he is not a happy puppy] – within an hour she ALSO has breathing issues. She fosters Iggy’s and has NO animal allergies and was the one who orignally took him in to get him to his first foster home and had NO issues then. Now the vet where he is now [our Rescue Vet] says he has sarcoptic Mange – yeah no. My animals would have that by now if that was the case, they don’t and doggie scabies do not produce hives. Here is the thing I think is an issue but don’t know: Roman loves baby carrots. He eats them like most dogs eat milk bones. I am wondering if those may be the issue? Like, they absorbed pesticides [I washed them] and when Roman ate them, it didn’t affect him but some how he is leeching the toxins out his pores? That is the only thing any of us who have come in contact with him can think. Could this be? Anyone have any ideas? I am at my wits end. Since this all started at my house, I do not know anything besides the carrots that could cause this. He got into NO cleaners, it wasn’t his shampoo, he ate nothing weird in the yard [he was watched when he went in the back - pool area], he didn’t roll in the grass [but I have organic lawn service so that's not it], he didn’t get ahold of anything bizarre in the house – ugh! I am at my wits end – help
Kaitlyn and Becky – thank you! I will get with the IGCA rescue and see about a specialist and if we have one. I agree – poor baby is miserable right now being boarded at the vets : ( He has NO clue why he has been bounced 3 times in 4 days and my cats miss him oddly enough not to mention my other Iggy. I miss him most of all – he was my boy [Reno likes the hubs best *lol*]. I too think it is something chemical with him but the other vet dismissed this out of hand }:-<

Poor pup. I’m guessing he’s got something unusual going on with his chemical make-up, something out of the ordinary for his breed and dogs in general, that humans are sensitive to. Maybe his pH/alkalinity is out of whack? Maybe the oils in his skin or his saliva chemistry are ‘off’…maybe an overabundance of bacteria, yeast, etc ?
I think you’re better off asking an allergist/physician rather than a vet on this one…but I do agree that mange mites is very unlikely — and of course it’s easy enough to prove/cure it that were the case.
