How Long Is Scabies Contagious Once Treatment Is Started?

If a dog is diagnosed with a serious case of Sarcoptic Mange, how long should s/he be quarantined? When can they safely go into a house with other, healthy dogs without risk of spreading the mites?

If she had sarcoptic mange and was with other dogs, then the other dogs were exposed and should be treated also for it. As sarcoptic mange is HIGHLY contagious to other dogs. It takes several weeks to rid the adults off the body, then it take about another few weeks to get all the larvae. Demodex mange is harder to rid a dog off since it can harbor in the skin for the rest of the dogs life and be brought on by stress and impropernutrition. I would treat and bath all the other dogs shes with to be sure that its not constantly being passed around from dog to dog. When we’d get a contaminated Sarcoptic dog into isolation we treat all the dogs in isolation.

Marty

Marty is approx. 4 months old. I found him frozen with fear on a very busy road one night and had to go onto the road to stop the cars and coax him across. He has taken up home in an area nearby. I suspect him of having Sarcoptic Mange, as you can see from the video he has lost quite a bit of fur and is on the thin side. Sarcoptic Mange usually appears in foxes that have a very poor diet, are dehydrated and stressed. I have been trying to feed him nutritious food with lots of lovely vitamins and fish oils, as well as giving him immune boosting puppy milk. I am also waiting on a delivery of specialised treatment made especially for foxes with a 99% success rate. When a fox has Sarcoptic Mange they usually only live for about 4 months so it’s really important that I help him to pick up his appetite and drinking. If his immunity improves, then so will his skin which will make it very difficult for the mange to survive. He is a very playful little guy and likes to steal anything anyone leaves on the ground for more than a second! He has also became best buddies with a Border Collie, even living in the bushes outside of his house. He even goes for walks with the border collie and his owner every night! *NOTE: The local wildlife centres request that I buy a cage and trap him, but they would not be able to come and collect him for at least 24 hours. It would be very cruel to do that to a little fox who has lots of energy. There is also nowhere to keep him for 24 hours. Because of this, I have taken a lot of expert advice and will proceed to treat him myself. I keep a close eye on all of the foxes that I interact with and make sure they are healthy. If their situation should become critical then I will consult a vet or next nearest wildlife centre for further advice.* I will post more videos of Marty’s progress.

Home remedy for sarcoptic mange?

Due to major illnes of family member, I am very short of spendable cash. My dog was seen by vet and has this type of mange. I purchased first bottle of medicine, but he needs more treatment and medicine is expensive. The ONLY active ingredient is sulpher so I am hoping someone may know of a tried and true home remedy that might work. Thank You in advance.

Honestly if you try another medication and it doesn’t work then the mange will come back just as bad and you will need to repeat the first treatment over again until the mange is completely cleared up. It will save you money in the long run if you continue with the proper treatment, also ask your vet if they have payment plans or other options for you. Best of luck!
